Gift card expiration dates and what you need to know before you buy?

Philip Maddox April 27, 2025

Gift card expiration dates can catch shoppers off guard, leading to lost value and disappointment. These small-print details determine how long you must spend your balance before it decreases or disappears entirely. While some gift cards never expire, others may begin charging inactivity fees or gradually reduce the balance after a specific period. Before purchasing or receiving a gift card, it’s crucial to check the terms regarding expiration. Knowing when your card expires helps ensure you use the full value of your gift. Checking your amexgiftcard/balance regularly is a simple way to stay aware of your available funds and any upcoming expiration dates that might affect your card’s value.

Watch out for these warning signs

Gift cards aren’t always as straightforward as they appear. Many cards have terms and conditions that can impact their value over time. Some retailers apply dormancy fees after a specific period of inactivity, which can steadily drain your balance without you making a single purchase. Others set hard deadlines, after which the card becomes completely worthless. The fine print matters enormously regarding gift cards, and many shoppers overlook these details until it’s too late. Pay special attention to cards from retailers facing financial difficulties, as bankruptcy proceedings can sometimes render gift cards useless overnight. Similarly, seasonal or promotional gift cards might have shorter expiration windows designed to drive quick foot traffic to stores.

Know your legal protections

  • Federal law requires that gift cards remain valid for at least five years from the activation date, providing a baseline of consumer protection regardless of the issuer.
  • Many states have enacted stronger consumer protection laws that extend expiration dates beyond federal minimums or prohibit expiration dates entirely.
  • Under current regulations, dormancy fees cannot be charged until after 12 months of inactivity, giving cardholders a full year of protection.
  • Any expiration dates or fees must be disclosed before purchase, typically printed directly on the card or its packaging.
  • Some types of gift products, like prepaid phone cards or promotional cards received with purchases, may be exempt from standard gift card laws.

Balance check essentials

Knowing your current balance is critical for making the most of your gift cards. Your balance can be checked online, through mobile apps, over the phone, or in-person at customer service desks. Regular balance checks help you plan purchases and alert you to unexpected fees or balance reductions. Before making a large purchase with a gift card, verify the balance to avoid checkout surprises. This becomes especially important if the card has been in your possession for several months, as inactivity fees might have been applied.

Reviving expired value

Many retailers honour expired gift cards as a customer service gesture, especially if the expiration date is recent. It’s always worth asking politely at customer service if they can make an exception. Some states have laws requiring card issuers to honour expired gift cards or refund any remaining balance for a small fee. Check your state’s specific gift card regulations for potential recovery options. For cards that genuinely cannot be redeemed, consider donating them to organisations that can sometimes recover partial value through special programs. This way, an expired card still serves a valuable purpose rather than languishing in a drawer.
